Grendel's Cave 2.1
New GC 2.1 Kingdoms, Including a $100 Cash Prize Jarl Kingdom
Starting on 9 April 2010, I am replacing the old kingdom types: Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced, with four new types: Thrall, Karl, Odal and Jarl.

The Thrall kingdom is the new beginning kingdom. I designed the Thrall kingdom to be an improved learning kingdom for new players. It has 128 levels and no restrictions on improvements. It has a new, multi-dimensional death rule. When killed, thanes with total stats at or lower than 125 go to Heorot Hall without any loss of stats and WITHOUT dropping any items or rings. This should help new players learn the combat system without the frustration of restarting repeatedly. Thanes killed with total stats over 125 but at or less than 500 go to Heorot Hall with a 4% loss of stats and they drop all their items and rings. Thanes over 500 total stats die normally. You can sail from the Thrall kingdom to any active Karl, the new Intermediate kingdom, without any loss of stats or items. The Thrall kingdom is non-PK (non-player killing).

The Karl kingdom is a replacement of the Intermediate kingdom. It is nearly the same as an Intermediate but does not use Quest area passwords. From a Karl kingdom, you can sail to any other active Karl, Odal (the new Advanced) or Jarl (the new $100 prize) kingdom at any time, with a significant loss of stats and items. The Karl kingdom is non-PK.

The Odal kingdom is a replacement of the Advanced kingdom. It does not use Quest area passwords. From an Odal kingdom, you can sail to any other active Odal or Jarl kingdom. The Odal kingdom is PK. Killing Grendel in an Odal kingdom earns you a place on the Hall of Fame.

The Jarl kingdom is a new, $100 prize, Advanced kingdom. It does have Quest area passwords and is more similar to the old Tournament kingdom, though the rope, maggot and ring Quest thresholds are much lower. The Jarl kingdom is PK and has the Championship kingdom feature of costing you an extra life to resurrect a thane killed by another player, paying the extra life to the account of the player that killed you. Killing Grendel in a Jarl kingdom earns you a place on the Hall of Fame and a $100 cash prize.
Personal Kingdoms
You may purchase a Personal Kingdom premium for 120 lives ($60) that lasts six months. A great thing about Personal Kingdoms is your resurrection costs in your own personal kingdom is reduced by one life. You can resurrect non-premium thanes in your own kingdom at no cost and premium thanes for only one life. If you configure your kingdom to allow the Witch to give hourglasses then there is no cost for your thanes to enter the kingdom. Hourglass kingdoms will cost you 99 lives to resurrect as the intention is for thanes to never resurrect in these types of kingdoms.

You can allow other accounts to enter your personal kingdoms. Set up a login name and password for your kingdom and when another account creates a new thane they can enter your kingdom if they enter the name and password. Resurrection and entry costs are not reduced for other accounts playing in your kingdoms.

You can configure your Personal Kingdom to your liking; as a Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, Tournament, Rumble or a completely customized kingdom. You can configure such attributes as cave depth, Witch Hourglasses, Player Killing allowed, Quest attributes, your own or system generated riddle questions, among many other attributes. You can even run your own tournaments by adding lives to your kingdom to provide a prize for any account that kills Grendel.

Start your own kingdom today and enjoy free resurrections and unlimited play.
Grendel's Cave 2.0 Info
On Sunday, November 11th, 2007, I rolled out Grendel's Cave 2.0. This new version is based on Norse Mythology and has Norse Quests. The game play is very similar to the old beta Norse GC with some minor differences.

This version of Grendel's Cave is free for all to play and does not have separate kingdoms for free players and paid subscribers. The game is no longer pay per click. You can play for free for as long and as much as you want.

You can resurrect a dead non-premium thane at the cost of one life. You can purchase lives at a rate of $0.50 per life, with a minimum purchase of ten lives. I converted the clicks for all previous paid subscribers to Grendel's Cave at the rate of 3650 clicks to one life, rounded up. Every paid subscriber started out with at least one life.

You can purchase premiums for lives at the rate in the following list.

  • Wolf thane for one life.
  • Personal picture for five lives.
  • Seer thane for five lives.
  • Kali thane five lives.
  • Berserker thane for ten lives.
  • Trickster thane for ten lives.
  • Valkyrie thane twenty lives.
There are four kingdom types; Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Tournament. The Beginning kingdom is very similar to the old Beginning kingdom with limited cave depth, limited improvements, a low death penalty and relaxed sailing rules. The Intermediate and Advanced kingdoms are similar to the old beta Norse IK and AK.

The Tournament kingdom is a competition kingdom with a cash prize of $500 for Killing Grendel. The TK has a harsh death or resurrection penalty. Only Human-Human thanes are allowed to enter the TK. Sailing into a TK from any other kingdom is never allowed. It is logically possible to kill Grendel in the TK but is so difficult that I do not think anyone will ever be able to do it. Good luck to any who try.

Please note that on November 11th, when I activated GC2.0, I completely removed the old versions of Grendel's Cave. All previous thanes, items and monsters, both in the free and paid kingdoms, were lost.

Thank you for your continued support,

Beowulf
A Word About Passwords
GC Community,

In the past there have been attempts and successes by players of Grendel's Cave to guess passwords. Please be careful with the password that you select.

Here is a link to a page that describes good and bad password how-tos.

Never use your thane or account name. Never use a single word that appears in the dictionary. Try to include a special character and a digit. Never use a word that could be guessed based on any personal information, including your thane name or your personality style.

I strongly suggest that all players read the advice in the above link and follow those guidelines. Make sure you have your email address saved with your account in case you forget your password. This is a convenient way to get your password via email. Please note, Grendel's Cave will not send out passwords to players via email.

Thanks,

Beowulf
