Notification to Players of Grendel's Cave

Grendel's Cave 2.5

On Friday, November 13, 2011, I rolled out Grendel's Cave 2.5. I based this version on Norse Mythology. It has Norse Quests, and introduces the concept of Kingdom Progression.

This version of Grendel's Cave is free for all to play. You can play free as long and as much as you want, however, if your thane dies and you wish to continue to play free you must start over. If you wish to continue playing with your dead thane, you can resurrect that thane at the cost of one life. You can purchase lives at a rate of $0.50 per life, with a minimum purchase of ten lives.

All previous paid subscribers to Grendel's Cave retained their accounts and life balances in this version.

GC 2.5 Changes

I added some significant changes to the game in this version. I made the game easier to play by adjusting monster values and increasing the improvement schedule for killing them. I adjusted certain higher-level spell values to make them easier to obtain. I increased rune drops. I eased up on cave level teleportation restrictions. I added improvement leftovers so thanes accumulate partial improvements for monsters killed.

I added a new Protection from Death premium. If you purchase this premium all thanes under your account will have protection from death, which means, if they die they go back to Heorot Hall and you do not have to pay to resurrect them.

I changed thane creation. You no longer pick your thane's species, but now you pick your thane's starting ability. The basic abilities are free, but you can pick from more advanced abilities at the cost of a life or lives.

GC 2.5 Premiums

You can purchase these premiums for lives at the rate in the following list.

  • Personal picture for five lives.
  • Protection from Death for one month for fifteen lives.
  • Personal Kingdom for one month for 15 lives.

GC 2.5 Kingdom Progression and Thrall Kingdom

In version 2.5, I introduced Kingdom Progression. You must advance your thane from low-level to high-level kingdoms by merit.

The Thrall kingdom is the beginning kingdom. I designed the Thrall kingdom to be a learning kingdom for new players. It has 128 levels and no restrictions on improvements. It has a multi-dimensional death rule. When killed, thanes with total stats at or lower than 125 go to Heorot Hall without any loss of stats and WITHOUT dropping any items or rings. This helps new players learn the combat system without the frustration of restarting repeatedly. Thanes killed with total stats over 125 but at or less than 500 go to Heorot Hall with a 4% loss of stats and they drop all their items and rings. Thanes over 500 total stats die normally. You can sail from the Thrall kingdom to any active Karl kingdom, without any loss of stats or items, only after your thane reaches a value of 1,000. The Thrall kingdom is non-PK (non-player killing).

GC 2.5 Karl and Odal Kingdoms

The Karl kingdom is an intermediate level kingdom. From a Karl kingdom, you can sail to any other active Karl kingdom, with a significant loss of stats and items. You can sail to any active Odal, advanced, kingdom, with a significant loss of stats and items, only after you slay Grendel in any Karl kingdom. The Karl kingdom is non-PK.

The Odal kingdom is an advanced level kingdom. From an Odal kingdom, you can sail to any other active Odal kingdom, with a significant loss of stats and items. You can sail to the active Jarl, expert, kingdom, with a significant loss of stats and items, only after you slay Grendel, Grendel's Mother and the Dragon in any Odal kingdom. The Odal kingdom is a PK kingdom; you can kill other players. Killing Grendel in an Odal kingdom earns you a place on the Hall of Fame.

GC 2.5 Jarl Kingdoms

The Jarl kingdom is an expert's kingdom and tests the skills of the best Grendel's Cave players. Only players who demonstrate the ability to kill Grendel, Grendel's Mother and the Dragon under advanced conditions can to play in the Jarl. The Jarl kingdom is a PK kingdom and you pay an extra life to resurrect any thane killed by another player. The account of the thane that killed you earns that extra life. Killing Grendel in a Jarl kingdom earns you a place on the Hall of Fame. Once you kill Grendel, Grendel's Mother and the Dragon in a Jarl kingdom I award you "King of Grendel's Cave for life" and give you your rightful place as "King" on the Hall of Fame.
